Taller de cultura urbana:

Malas calles, arte y supervivencia, con Henry Chalfant

Durante este taller se explorarán las técnicas y estrategias de antropología visual que el profesor ha utilizado para documentar las formas de la cultura popular urbana que surgieron en la ciudad de Nueva York en la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Usando sus documentales y fotografías se debatirán aspectos de la historia social y cultural del Bronx Sur, desde la época del Mambo a la aparición de las violentas bandas callejeras y el posterior intento de sus integrantes en hacer la paz y transformar las bandas en organizaciones sociales. Se realizará una presentación fotográfica sobre el arte del graffiti, su evolución, su contexto histórico y social, y los efectos que la fotografía y la atención de los medios han tenido en esta subcultura.

En este período el graffiti de Nueva York estaba en una de sus más altos niveles de creatividad, con obras de artistas tales como LEE, DONDI, SKEME, VISTA y BLADE entre otros.... En primer lugar está el libro Subway Art (1984 ) del que es co-autor con Martha Cooper; la película Style Wars (1983 ) que co-produjo con el director Tony Silver, y en 1987 el libro Spraycan Art, realizado con James Prigoff.

Bad streets, art and survival, Henry Chalfant

During this workshop there will be explored the skills and strategies of visual anthropology that the teacher has used to document the forms of the popular urban culture that arose in the city of New York in the second half of the XXth century. Using his documentaries and photography will debate aspects of the social and cultural history of the South Bronx, from the epoch of the Mambo to the appearance of the violent street bands and the post In this period the graffiti of New York was in one of his highest levels of creativity, with works of such artists as HE READS, DONDI, SKEME, SIGHT and BLADE between others....
